We train outstanding clinicians to be leaders in the field of critical care medicine. Our training programs are grounded in cutting-edge educational principles and complemented by an exceptional array of clinical experiences and innovative educational opportunities. We offer training for fellows, residents, medical students and faculty.
- Fellows choose Pittsburgh for our innovative Multidisciplinary Critical Care Training Program (MCCTP) that integrates trainees from multiple residency specialties
- Medical students and residents obtain early exposure to the art of caring for the critically ill in diverse clinical settings including transplant, neurotrauma and pediatric cardiac intensive care units
- Faculty benefit from our many CME opportunities featuring national and international acute care and critical care experts
Multidisciplinary Critical Care Training Program for Fellows
The MCCTP is one of the most integrated critical care training programs in the world. We attract trainees from multiple specialties including anesthesiology, emergency medicine, internal medicine and IM subspecialties, neurology, neurosurgery, pediatrics and pediatric cardiology, and surgery. Fellows work and learn together which allows development of a camaraderie built on shared clinical experiences and the exchange of medical knowledge across specialties.
MCCTP Fellowships
Adult Division
Pediatric Division
All MCCTP fellowship training experiences combine hands-on clinical care with didactic learning and interactive simulation through the University of Pittsburgh’s Winter Institute for Simulation Education and Research.
Training also includes administrative, educational and research skills necessary to excel as an academic intensivist. In addition to the fellows’ contributions to provision of expert critical care services, they also actively develop clinical protocols, participate in research activities, coordinate educational efforts for ICUs, lead multidisciplinary committees, and champion quality improvement programs to enrich overall quality of patient care. Our MCCTP fellows are trained to assume leadership positions in the field of critical care medicine.
We are proud to be the home of the world’s first dedicated critical care training program, founded in 1961 by Peter Safar, MD
